Box Tree Moth is a non-native, invasive species in the United States and Europe. It poses a serious threat to the health of both European and Asian varieties of Boxwood (Buxus spp). First detected in Ohio in June 2023, it has spread to 11 counties including: Hamilton, Montgomery, Greene, Butler, Clark, Clermont, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Greene, Miami, Preble, and Warren as of October 1, 2025.
Boxwoods are a key landscape plant and a large component of the Ohio nursery industry. The larva or caterpillar of Box Tree Moth feed on the foliage leading to defoliation of these evergreen shrubs. They can move onto the stems with the potential of killing the plant. Fortunately Box Tree Moth is easily managed if caught early so early detection is crucial. Learning to recognize the caterpillars and adults, how to report, and what to do will help us slow the spread of this new invasive insect.
